How do Multi-player Beauty Contest Games affect the Level of Reasoning in Subsequent Two Player games?

چکیده
Behavioural economists have employed beauty contest games in order to test for agents’ depth of reasoning. In multi-player beauty contest games, fully rational players should all bid zero. In experiments, it is observed that average bids are consistently much greater than zero, which may reflect a population of players consisting of a combination of full and bounded rationality. In contrast, in two-player beauty contest games, bids above zero unambiguously reflect irrational play. In this paper, we conduct an experiment in which agents play several rounds of a multiplayer beauty contest game, but then switch to a two-player beauty contest game for the remaining rounds. We demonstrate that bids are above zero for the multi-player game and remain above zero for the switching rounds (we postulate that players seem initially to anchor on their behaviour in the multi-player game). However, players learn rapidly, with the average bid rapidly approaching zero towards the final rounds of the twoplayer game.

Testing Cognitive Hierarchy Theories of Beauty Contest Games
1 Summary Behavioral game theory experiments consistently reveal that individuals deviate from theoretically optimal (Nash equilibrium) strategies even in simple games. The α-beauty contest is among the simplest games that elicit such non-optimal behavior; accordingly, there is substantial interest in formally characterizing the observed play for this game. have proposed an intuitively appealin...

The main goal of the study is to examine the effect of rewards on the behavior of players in a team activity. In this framework, by performing 12 sequential and simultaneous games in a laboratory environment examine the rewarding effect on players' behavior. Students from Yazd universities surveyed and the sample of 182 students is in the form of two groups, which collected in total for 2184 ma...
متن کاملAn Agent-Based Model of Behavior in “Beauty Contest” Games
Recently, computer simulation, particularly agent-based modeling, has grown in popularity as a method to uncover macro patterns and developments that emerge from simple micro behavior. The present paper combines both techniques by using protocol analysis to uncover player strategies in an experiment and encoding those strategies in an agent-based computer simulation. In particular, Keynes’ (193...

متن کاملRational Reasoning or Adaptive Behavior? Evidence from TwoPerson Beauty Contest Games
Many experiments have shown that human subjects do not necessarily behave in line with game theoretic assumptions and solution concepts. The reasons for this nonconformity are multiple. In this paper we study the argument whether a deviation from game theory is because subjects are rational, but doubt that others are rational as well, compared to the argument that subjects, in general, are bou...
